Pages

For the past year or so, I have been co-supervisor of the Pages at SSLDL with my co-worker Jennifer. We have a great group of Pages, and I believe it is due to both our interview process and our training process. Since Jennifer and I created both, I will share them here.

Training Checklist

During the interview, we talk about the library's mission, our customer service philosophy, our history and our plans for the future, and we give a tour of the library. The tour is especially important for potential Pages because it gives them an idea of how many collections they will be responsible for keeping organized and how big the library building is. It also allows us to chat more informally while we tour.

The training checklist is very important. It ensures that new hires get all the information they need to do their job. It also allows both the trainer and the trainee to sign off that the understand each piece. Sometimes we wait a few days until the new employee has worked on a certain item before we check it off. This gives them the opportunity to ask questions and try out each procedure before they initial that they are confident doing each piece of their job.

Paging is a very complex job, and is absolutely crucial to the smooth running of the library.
